Athena Perspectives – 15th October 2024
This edition of Athena Perspectives explores the significant ramifications of decentralising power in Nigeria, focusing on the Supreme Court’s July 2024 ruling that grants financial autonomy to the country’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
The direct allocation of funds is expected to enhance accountability, boost grassroots development, and allow LGAs to tailor projects to local needs. However, there are observable challenges such as the risks of corruption and the ambiguity of their role within Nigeria’s federal structure.
To address these issues, the perspective recommends capacity-building initiatives, stronger oversight mechanisms, and reforms to local government elections. It also emphasises the need for constitutional clarity on LGA autonomy to align with the country’s governance framework.
