Athena Commentary

It’s disheartening to see the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) struggling to fulfill its constitutional obligations. The delay in conducting by-elections not only breaches Section 76(2) of the Constitution but also undermines the democratic process. Citizens deserve timely representation, and the lack of funds should not be an excuse for stalling elections, especially when other nations’ electoral bodies manage to uphold their responsibilities under challenging circumstances.

INEC’s inability to act proactively reflects poorly on its commitment to democracy. The vacant seats in the National Assembly and Houses of Assembly leave constituents without a voice, which is unacceptable. The Senate and House of Representatives have rightly called for accountability, but it’s high time INEC steps up and ensures that such delays do not become a recurring issue. The integrity of the electoral process depends on it.
